for Stroke Awareness
Stroke Prevention
Stroke is a prevalent yet preventable cerebrovascular disease, and HASA aims to decrease its prevalence in the Baltimore community. Hospitals can provide treatment to reverse the brain damage caused by some types of stroke, but we work through primary prevention to help at-risk individuals avoid the onset of stroke.
Healthy Lifestyle
Education and goal-setting for healthier lifestyles can help decrease the risk factors of stroke, such as hypertension, diabetes, and smoking.
Increase Exercise
We try to establish a tailored plan for each individual to reduce the risk of stroke, including ways to exercise on a regular basis.
Reduce Stress
Stress is a common risk factor which we address with patients and community members by suggesting ways to alleviate stress or simply being there for support and offering a listening ear.
Lower Blood Pressure
We advise community members to see a doctor if they have abnormally high pressure and remind individuals with hypertension to continue taking their medication and monitoring their baseline pressure.
Eat Healthy
Follow a healthy diet to lower your risk for stroke by having a lower sodium and lower fat diet.
Stop Smoking
Stopping smoking today already decreases your risk for stroke.
